The Batik on Silk Process
Batik is the ancient art form of applying wax resist and colored dyes to fabric. Batik is found in many parts of Asia, and is especially well known in Indonesia for the very detailed and beautiful cloths produced since the 12 century.
First, we design the artwork by hand or on a computer. Once the design is finalized we draw and enlarge the design onto tissue paper to the exact size of the scarf. The tissue paper allows us to easily erase or make changes.
Next, High quality white silk is placed on top of the paper drawing and traced using a soft pencil. These pencil lines are the guides to where the wax resist will be applied.
Then, thin lines of melted wax is applied to the silk using a Tjanting tool, a wooden handled tool with a tiny metal cup with a tiny spout, out of which the wax seeps. Wherever the wax has seeped through the dye will not penetrate. The application of wax with the Tjanting tool is done with great care therefore is very time-consuming.
Once all the pencil lines are waxed it is carefully stretched onto a wooden frame in preparation for paint. The silk cannot touch any surface or else the dyes could smear.
The silk is painted with special brushes of varied widths using high qualitiy colorfast dyes. Again, the painting is done with great care. The time needed to paint a scarf depends on the amount of detail and color combinations. Once the scarf is painted it is hung up to dry.
When the silk is dry after a day the scarf is boiled to desolve the wax resist lines leaving a clean white line where the wax used to be.
The final steps is ironing and hand sewing the edges.
Batik is a multi-step process that requires great care, technique and time. Each step takes a day or two depending on the design.
We pride ourselves in creating high quality work and technique with little or no mistakes only acquired through years of experince as Batik artists. But with any hand painted work of art there will always be signs that it was made by an artists hands which adds to it uniqueness and magic. e prid
I consider Batik Magical. There are many aspect thoughtout the process that can affect the final result of the silks artwork which only add to it exclusiveness. . The final silk scarf is a one-of-a -kind hand painted wearable work of art that feel and looks beautiful, with vibrant colors and worthy of hanging on your wall.
